NATIONAL| INDIA, NAGPUR, MUMBAI/ MAHARASHTRA 31st MARCH, 2026 (GPN/ By- Dr. ABHIJEET KARAD): What often begins as occasional acidity, bloating, or fatigue is easy to ignore, until it becomes a persistent disruption to daily life. These seemingly minor symptoms can be early indicators of chronic gastrointestinal (GI)  conditions that frequently go undetected until they begin to impact overall health and routine functioning.

Dr Abhijeet Karad, Consultant – Gastroenterology, Aditya Birla Memorial Hospital explains, “Chronic GI  conditions are steadily emerging as major long-term health concerns in India. Despite affecting millions, they remain underdiagnosed due to low awareness and the tendency to overlook early warning signs. Globally, nearly 40% of adults experience functional GI disorders, while in India, over 36 million people are affected by GI and liver-related non-communicable diseases.”

Lifestyle Shifts Driving Disease Progression
Rapid urbanisation, sedentary lifestyles, and changing dietary habits are key contributors. High intake of ultra-processed foods, low fibre consumption, chronic stress, and reduced physical activity are disrupting digestive and metabolic health. Conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), fatty liver disease, peptic ulcers, and chronic constipation are increasingly common. Colorectal cancer is also rising in urban India, linked to sedentary behaviour and dietary patterns.

Impact Beyond the Primary Organ
These conditions extend far beyond the gut. Patients often experience fatigue, poor nutrient absorption, disturbed sleep, and reduced productivity. Many end up structuring daily routines around symptoms such as urgent bowel movements or persistent discomfort. In GI disorders, deficiencies of iron, vitamin B12, vitamin D, and zinc are common due to malabsorption. The gut–brain connection further links these conditions with higher rates of anxiety, depression, and stress.

Why Early Diagnosis Matters
Early diagnosis is critical to preventing complications. Delays are often caused by stigma or misinterpreting symptoms as minor issues. Late detection of conditions such as IBD can lead to irreversible intestinal damage and increase colorectal cancer risk. Warning signs such as unexplained weight loss, blood in stool, persistent abdominal pain, difficulty swallowing, prolonged vomiting, swelling, or sudden changes in bowel or urinary habits should prompt timely medical evaluation.

Diet and Lifestyle as the Foundation of Care
Management goes beyond medication. Personalised dietary planning is essential, as triggers vary across individuals. Diets such as low-FODMAP for IBS, gluten-free for celiac disease, and anti-inflammatory approaches for IBD can improve outcomes. A balanced diet, regular exercise, stress management, and avoiding smoking and excessive alcohol intake play a key role in long-term health.

Advances Improving Long-Term Outcomes
Medical advancements have significantly improved outcomes. Biologic therapies, advanced endoscopic procedures, capsule endoscopy, and minimally invasive surgeries are transforming GI care.  Telemedicine is also strengthening continuity of care, especially in smaller cities.

The Overlooked Role of Oral Health
Oral health is an often-overlooked factor. Poor oral hygiene and gum disease can increase inflammation and may worsen GI conditions or raise colorectal cancer risk. Maintaining oral hygiene and regular dental check-ups are essential components of holistic care.

With early diagnosis, consistent follow-up, and a holistic approach combining medical care, nutrition, and lifestyle changes, individuals can lead active and productive lives. With the right medical guidance, these conditions can be effectively managed without compromising quality of life.
