Workshop on ‘Air Pollution Mitigation at Construction Sites’ Held in Mumbai

Joint initiative by Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and WRI India to engage with construction professionals on strategies to control air pollution at project sites.

MUMBAI, 15 OCTOBER, 2025 (GPN/ BABITA PRABHAKAR M 📞8355975478): A workshop on ‘Air Pollution Mitigation at Construction Sites’ was jointly organized on October 13, 2025, by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and WRI India, with the support of the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB), India Alliance for Clean Construction (IACC), NAREDCO (National Real Estate Development Council), CREDAI–MCHI, and the Practising Engineers, Architects and Town Planners Association (PEATA).

The workshop focused on understanding the sources and causes of air pollution generated at construction sites, current work practices, and effective mitigation measures to control pollution.

The initiative was undertaken under the guidance of Additional Municipal Commissioner (City) Dr. (Mrs.) Ashwini Joshi, following directives from BMC Commissioner and Administrator Mr. Bhushan Gagrani, as part of BMC’s ongoing efforts through its Environment and Climate Change Department to curb air pollution in Mumbai.

Held at the new administrative building of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) in Bandra Kurla Complex, the workshop saw participation from key officials, including Deputy Municipal Commissioner (Environment and Climate Change) Mr. Avinash Kate, Executive Engineer (Environment and Climate Change) Mrs. Varsha Athalye, Executive Engineer (Development Planning) Mr. Suhas Nemane, Technical Expert (WRI India) Mr. Sandeep Narang, Low-Cost Sensor Specialist Mr. Sandeep Madhwal, CEO (CREDAI–MCHI) Mr. Keval Valambhia, Joint Secretary (NAREDCO) Mr. Vishal Thakkar, and President (PEATA) Mr. Sandeep Isore, among others.

Speaking at the event, Deputy Municipal Commissioner Mr. Avinash Kate said,“Mumbai is expanding rapidly with new infrastructure, housing, and transport projects. However, this fast-paced development also brings challenges. Dust and emissions from construction activities are among the leading causes of air pollution. Construction professionals must adopt effective on-site measures to control and mitigate this pollution. Strict adherence to BMC’s air pollution control guidelines at construction sites will definitely yield positive results. This will ensure not just development, but also a healthy environment for workers and citizens alike.”

He further emphasized that developers, engineers, project managers, contractors, and administrative bodies must work collectively to address the problem.

During the workshop, Mr. Sandeep Narang delivered a technical presentation highlighting key pollution sources at construction sites, their impact, and various control measures to mitigate emissions.

A total of 108 participants, including builders, developers, engineers, and project managers, took part in the workshop.
