MUMBAI, 15 JULY, 2025 (GPN): The Plastics Export Promotion Council (PLEXCONCIL), established on July 15, 1955, by the Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Government of India, proudly celebrates 70 years of promoting and supporting India’s plastics export industry. As a non-profit organisation representing over 3,000 exporters across the plastics value chain, PLEXCONCIL has played a pivotal role in positioning India as a trusted global supplier of high-quality plastic products.
From its inception, PLEXCONCIL has worked relentlessly to boost India’s image as a reliable export partner. Through participation in international trade fairs, exhibitions, and buyer-seller meets, the Council has provided a platform for Indian manufacturers to access global markets. Strategic collaborations, policy advocacy, and ongoing support for members have been central to the Council’s mission.
“Over the past 70 years, PLEXCONCIL has been at the forefront of championing India’s plastics export industry, helping it evolve from humble beginnings to a global powerhouse,” said Vikram Bhadauria, Chairman of PLEXCONCIL. “Through strategic initiatives, innovative policies, and a commitment to excellence, we have empowered over 3000+ exporters to reach markets across the globe. As we celebrate this remarkable legacy, we remain focused on fostering growth, driving sustainability, and adapting to new challenges, ensuring that India continues to be a trusted and competitive leader in the global plastics industry.”
“India’s plastics exports have grown exponentially — from US$ 15.5 million in 1955-56 to over US$ 11.5 billion in 2023-24. This success reflects India’s robust export infrastructure, innovation capacity, and adaptability in meeting evolving global demand”, said Vikram Bhadauria, Chairman of PLEXCONCIL. “This growth is a testament to our industry’s innovation, adaptability, and strong global demand across diverse product categories and geographies.”
Looking ahead, the Indian plastics industry remains optimistic about untapped opportunities in Africa, Latin America, and the CIS region, where growing industrial activity and infrastructure development are expected to drive demand for Indian plastic products. To further strengthen global competitiveness and expand market access, the sector is advocating for the early conclusion of key international trade agreements. It also includes a Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) with the United States and Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) with the United Kingdom and the European Union. These strategic partnerships are anticipated to significantly boost India’s export capabilities and unlock new avenues for growth.
“With expanding opportunities in emerging markets such as Africa, Latin America, and the CIS region, and with critical trade agreements on the horizon, we are confident in achieving our target of 12% export growth for 2025–26. PLEXCONCIL’s 70-year journey has been a testament to the resilience, innovation, and ambition of India’s plastics export sector,” said Executive Director of PLEXCONCIL, Mr. Sribash Dasmohapatra. “From its inception in 1955, we have supported over 3000+ exporters in navigating global markets, providing them with the tools, resources, and strategic guidance to thrive. As we look towards the future, our commitment to fostering growth, enhancing competitiveness, and promoting sustainability remains unwavering. Together with our members, we will continue to elevate India’s position as a global leader in the plastics industry. The future of India’s plastics exports looks strong and globally competitive.” He added.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, India further strengthened its global standing as a reliable sourcing hub for plastics. Initiatives like Plexconnect 2024, India’s only export-focused plastics exhibition, have drawn international attention, with successful Reverse Buyer-Seller Meets fostering direct business interactions. PLEXCONCIL’s efforts in conducting market surveys, disseminating export statistics, and promoting the industry through PR and digital platforms have ensured that Indian exporters are well-informed and globally competitive. Additionally, by actively participating in leading international plastics exhibitions, the council provides a global stage for Indian exporters to showcase their capabilities and explore new business opportunities.
The growth in India’s plastics exports during FY 2024–25 was driven by strong performances across several key product categories. Plastic Films & Sheets saw a robust 15.9% rise, increasing from US$ 1,750 million to US$ 2,028 million, while FIBC, Woven Sacks, Woven Fabrics & Tarpaulin grew by 16% to reach US$ 1,571 million, up from US$ 1,355 million. Floorcoverings, Leathercloth & Laminates also recorded a healthy 9.9% increase, totaling US$ 762 million compared to USD 693 million in the previous fiscal year. India’s plastics export portfolio remains well-diversified, with key markets including the United States, China, the UAE, and Brazil.
Looking ahead, PLEXCONCIL remains committed to addressing future challenges, including the global shift toward sustainability. By encouraging innovation and eco-friendly manufacturing practices, the Council aims to empower Indian exporters to meet environmental standards while seizing new opportunities.
