NAVI MUMBAI, 13 JUNE 2025 (GPN) – Apollo Hospitals Navi Mumbai is set to inaugurate a state-of-the-art Obesity Clinic on June 14, 2025, aiming to address the escalating obesity crisis in the region. This initiative is grounded in a pivotal study conducted by Dr. Sanjay Khare, Visiting Chief and Senior Consultant in Internal Medicine, and Director of Bariatric Medicine at Apollo Hospitals Navi Mumbai. Dr. Khare’s research provides critical insights into the prevalence and impact of obesity, underscoring the urgent need for specialized care. India is confronting a significant public health challenge, with the World Health Organization (WHO) reporting that obesity is a leading cause of numerous chronic diseases, including cardiovascular conditions, type 2 diabetes, and certain cancers. These conditions are often linked to systemic inflammation, which can damage blood vessels and organs over time, leading to severe health complications. Addressing obesity is therefore crucial not only for weight management but also for the prevention of these life-threatening diseases.
Particularly concerning is the rise in childhood obesity. A Lancet study revealed that approximately 12.5 million children aged 5 to 19 in India were obese in 2022, the highest in the world, and a significant increase from 0.4 million in 1990. This alarming trend is attributed to factors such as increased consumption of processed foods, sugary beverages, and a sedentary lifestyle characterized by excessive screen time and limited physical activity.
The upcoming Obesity Clinic at Apollo Hospitals Navi Mumbai seeks to combat these challenges by providing comprehensive care that addresses the root causes of obesity. Through personalized treatment plans and a focus on sustainable lifestyle changes, the clinic aims to improve the health and well-being of individuals affected by obesity, particularly children and adolescents.
Speaking about clinic, Dr Khare noted, “The comprehensive study of over 3,000 individuals from Navi Mumbai’s NRI Colony—conducted with zero statistical bias—confirms what we’re seeing nationwide: India is rapidly becoming the pediatric obesity capital. This isn’t just about weight—it’s the root of serious health issues like early-onset diabetes, hormonal imbalances, and cardiovascular risks in children. With Apollo’s new Obesity Clinic, we’re launching a science-driven, community-based intervention that prioritizes early diagnosis, personalized counseling, and long-term lifestyle transformation through schools, societies, and families.”
Mr. Arunesh Punetha, Regional CEO- Western Region, Apollo Hopsitals, emphasized the hospital’s mission in this context, remarking, “With this clinic, Apollo reinforces its commitment to preventive healthcare. We’re not just treating obesity—we’re transforming community health by driving awareness, diagnosis, and education at the grassroots level, starting with our children.”
