Heightened political chatter triggers truce between family foes over Sharad – Ajit Pawar and Uddhav – Raj Thackeray reunion row

MUMBAI, 22 APRIL, 2025 (GPN):   There is currently a lot of talk about the Thackeray brothers’ alliance in the state. After MNS president Raj Thackeray made a statement regarding the alliance with Uddhav Thackeray, discussions started in the state regarding the Thackeray brothers coming together again. Since Uddhav Thackeray also responded to Raj Thackeray’s statement, everyone is watching to see if there will be a new beginning in the state’s politics. While political leaders from all parties are expressing their views on this new development, Sharad Pawar also commented on this addressing the media in Pune.
Sharad Pawar presented his position on the use of artificial intelligence in the agricultural sector in Pune. While interacting with the media, he commented on many issues.During this, journalists asked him about the ongoing discussions regarding the coming together of Raj Thackeray and Uddhav Thackeray. To this, he replied in one sentence, “The discussions are preliminary. I am not aware of this. This is his family matter. I have not spoken to him. How can I comment on it”.Raj Thackeray had quit Shiv Sena, the party founded by uncle Balasaheb Thackeray, over differences with his cousin in 2006 and formed the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena or MNS.In 2003, Uddhav Thackeray was named the Shiv Sena’s working president. While Raj Thackeray had been around longer and was expected to be his uncle’s political heir by a section of the Shiv Sena, some saw the decision as Bal Thackeray favouring his son over his nephew. It was Raj Thackeray who was chosen to make the announcement at that time. Two years later, Raj Thackeray announced he was quitting the party.
Eknath Shinde recently met Raj Thackeray, who made it clear that after leaving the Shiv Sena he would not work under anyone else, cutting down on the possibility of the two coming together.
NCP (SP) president Sharad Pawar on Tuesday dismissed speculation around a political reconciliation with his estranged nephew and Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, stating that there was “nothing wrong in talking to representatives of the state government” on matters of public interest.

“We have been working to increase sugarcane production for several years. Working in silos is not possible, as the government’s role is equally important,” Pawar said. “There is nothing wrong in talking to representatives of the state government on issues concerning the common people.”

The remarks came amid heightened political chatter triggered by three meetings between the uncle-nephew duo within a fortnight. On Monday, the two leaders appeared together at a sugar industry event in Pune, fuelling speculation of rapprochement. However, Pawar downplayed the significance of the meetings.

Meanwhile, regarding the use of Al in the agricultural sector, he said, “The joke is that this policy is being implemented, not the reality. Prataprao Pawar met the Agriculture Minister. He told him its importance, after which it is learnt that the Agriculture Minister told him to implement this policy. It was started in Baramati. We have been studying it for the last two years. This technology is useful in agriculture. Our interest is in agriculture. It makes it possible to maintain the soil texture and identify the need for fertilizer. Farmers should use it in their farming. I am happy that the state government has announced the use of Al technology for five more crops.”
Pawar also expressed concern over worsening water scarcity in Maharashtra, urging citizens to use water judiciously in the coming months. He said, “According to my information, it is 43 percent, but you say it is 38 percent. It is something to worry about. This has happened before too. It did not happen today. I am sure that farmers will also use water carefully. There are two months to go, May and June. Careful steps will have to be taken.”

In another development that caught political observers’ attention, Pawar was seen attending a meeting at Vidya Pratishthan, an educational institution in Baramati, alongside Ajit Pawar’s wife and Rajya Sabha MP Sunetra Pawar and his grandnephew Yugendra Pawar. A moment from the event — where Yugendra was seen touching Sunetra Pawar’s feet on his birthday — drew attention for its symbolic message.

“Despite political differences, my affection and respect for my uncle (Ajit Pawar) and aunt remains unchanged,” Yugendra said, in response to questions about the gesture.

The relationship between Sharad and Ajit Pawar turned hostile after Ajit led a split in the Nationalist Congress Party in July 2023 and joined the BJP-led Mahayuti government in the state. Several MLAs from the original NCP joined Ajit’s faction, triggering the biggest crisis of Sharad Pawar’s political career.
