The girl who was suffering from polymyositis and extreme weakness, finds hope through advanced cell-based therapy
NAVI MUMBAI, 18 APRIL, 2025 (GPN): A team headed by Dr. Pradeep Mahajan, Regenerative Medicine Researcher & Founder of StemRx Hospital & Research Centre, has successfully treated a 15-year-old girl from Kenya, suffering from a rare autoimmune disorder, polymyositis, and extreme weakness. Shannon, who had been unable to walk, talk, or even perform basic daily activities, is now regaining full control of her life after undergoing innovative cell-based therapy in India.
Shannon, a lively and active 15-year-old who once enjoyed school and everyday life, was suddenly struck by what seemed like a simple cold allergy, but it quickly turned into a serious condition that left her bedridden and helpless. She had loss of sensation in her legs, intense pain, difficulty moving, and even trouble with basic tasks like eating and drinking. Doctors in Kenya were unable to identify the cause of her condition despite numerous tests and consultations. Shannon’s mother, Saita, tirelessly sought help from specialists, but as her daughter’s condition worsened, hope seemed to fade.
In early March, after consultations with doctors from India, Shannon and her mother decided to visit  India for further treatment. Upon arriving at StemRx Hospital, Dr. Pradeep Mahajan diagnosed Shannon with polymyositis, an autoimmune disease causing severe neuromuscular inflammation.  Dr. Mahajan assured Shannon’s mother that they could help her daughter regain her independence and walk again.
Dr. Pradeep Mahajan, Regenerative Medicine Researcher & Founder of StemRx Hospital & Research Centre, said, to Babita Murdeshwar, “Shannon’s case was particularly complex as she was diagnosed with polymyositis, a rare autoimmune disorder that causes severe inflammation in the muscles. Her condition resulted in loss of motor function and an inability to perform even the most basic daily tasks. The diagnosis was challenging, but through a detailed examination and the use of advanced regenerative medicine, we were able to identify the root cause of her symptoms. At StemRx, our therapy combines stem cell treatment, targeted physiotherapy, and neuro-rehabilitation to regenerate the damaged muscle tissue and restore motor functions, which was vital in Shannon’s case.”
Dr. Mahajan further emphasized, “What set Shannon’s treatment apart was the approach of addressing the underlying cause of her illness, rather than just managing symptoms. Through stem cell therapy, we were able to promote healing at the cellular level, helping her body regain strength and mobility. As she started responding to the treatment, we saw remarkable improvements in her muscle strength, coordination, and even her emotional well-being. Shannon’s recovery is a testament to the power of stem cell therapy and the potential of regenerative medicine to offer lasting solutions to even the most severe health challenges.”
“I never imagined I would be able to walk again without assistance, let alone live without constant pain. Dr Mahajan has given me back my independence and, more importantly, my confidence. I was in a dark place when I first arrived in India, but now I see the light again. Every small improvement feels like a huge victory, and I am incredibly grateful to Dr. Mahajan and the team for their support. This treatment has not just healed my body but my spirit as well. I can’t put into words how thankful I am for the second chance at life I’ve been given.”, said Shanon
Shannon’s mother expressed, “When we first came to StemRx, we were desperate and unsure. Watching Shannon struggle with paralysis and losing hope every day was heartbreaking.   Although multiple doctors in Europe and Kenya diagnosed Shannon’s condition, none of the treatments they recommended provided her with any relief. Dr. Mahajan and his team gave us a glimmer of hope. Their dedication, expertise, and compassionate care have truly changed Shannon’s life. Today, my daughter is not only physically stronger but also emotionally restored. The progress she has made is beyond anything we expected. We will be forever thankful for this new chapter in Shannon’s life, and we are hopeful for the future.”
