MUMBAI, 18th AUGUST, 2024 (GPN): Today, all doctors and staff at Dr L H Hiranandani Hospital in Powai staged a silent protest to express their solidarity with the nationwide outcry following the tragic rape and murder of a post-graduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. In a strong show of support, the hospital’s OPD remained closed for the entire day.

Commenting on the protest Dr Sameer Kulkarni – CEO of Dr L H Hiranandani Hospital said “It is deeply distressing that such heinous acts continue to occur in our country. We urge the CBI to expedite their investigation and ensure that all those responsible are swiftly prosecuted and punished. We believe that government will implement stricter laws to prevent such atrocities in the future”.  While addressing concerns about the impact of the protest on patients at the hospital, Dr.  Kulkarni added, “On an average Saturday, we typically see 900 to 1000 OPD patients. To minimize their inconvenience, we informed them in advance about the closure and advised them to visit the hospital starting Monday. Patients with severe conditions requiring immediate attention were directed to our casualty department, where they were promptly treated. We also ensured that our 24X7 Emergency Department and ICUs were fully staffed, so patient care was not compromised.”

In addition to the silent protest, the event featured a condolence ceremony, marches, and speeches by senior doctors, with the active participation and support of patients’ families. The posters created by the doctors and staff, bearing powerful messages advocating for the protection of women, captured the attention of all.
