NATIONAL NEWS:
- The Uttar Pradesh Government is to launch Kisan Kalyan mission. It aims to double the farmer income . The mission will also encourage farmers to time their cultivation of crops according to the demand of the market.
- Heavy snowfall in Kashmir valley disrupts traffic movement. Around 5-inch snow were accumulated in plains including Srinagar, while 1 to 2 feet was accumulated in hills .
- The Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) leader Rakesh Tikait on Sunday (January 3, 2021) said that the farmers’ protests will not end till the Centre rolls back the new agricultural laws.
- The expert panel sent COVISHIELD vaccine for approval by the Drugs Controller General of India. The committee also recommended COVAXIN for restricted use in an emergency situation subject to multiple regulatory conditions.
- PM Narendra Modi, President Ram Nath Kovind express grief over deaths in roof collapse at Ghaziabad cremation ground :
23 people have died so far and 15 people were admitted to different hospitals. At least 18 of the dead had been identified by the evening.
The incident took place on Sunday when several people had taken shelter under a structure at the cremation ground while it was raining. - PM Modi will dedicate the Kochi-Mangaluru Natural Gas Pipeline to the nation on Tuesday (January 5, 2021) at 11 AM via video conferencing. This is to be noted that the 450 km long pipeline has been built by GAIL (India) Ltd and has a transportation capacity of 12 Million Metric Standard Cubic Metres per day.
- It will carry natural gas from the Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) Regasification Terminal at Kochi (Kerala) to Mangaluru (Dakshina Kannada district, Karnataka) while passing through Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur and Kasaragod districts.
- Union Minister D V Sadananda Gowda collapsed due to low blood sugar in Chitradurga while on his way to the city from Shivamogga on Sunday and has been admitted to a hospital
- AIMIM supremo Assaduddin Owaisi on Sunday arrived at Furfura Sharif in Bengal’s Hooghly district and held discussions on the state’s political scenario and upcoming assembly polls with prominent Muslim leader Abbas Siddiqui.
- The Government of India has recently prepared a bill to increase the age of shopkeepers selling cigarettes and tobacco products from 81 years to 21 years.

- Bengaluru- Kempegowda airport suburban train to finally start from Monday : A total of five trains from the city will take commuters to the airport.
- Several states and cities in India have decided to reopen their schools, colleges and other educational institutions this month. Most of the states are reopening the schools only for higher classes such as students of class 9 to 12 have to appear for the board exams set to take place in the first half of 2021.
- The government of Bihar & Tripura has announced that the schools in the states will reopen from January 4 for students of classes 9 to 12. The Odisha government has announced that schools will reopen for students of standards 10 and 12 from January 8. In Kerala: Classroom studies for classes 10 and 12 resumed on the first day of the new year.
- General Bipin Rawat, Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) visited Army and ITBP personnel deployed in the forward most air maintained post along Subansiri valley in Arunachal Pradesh. He complimented soldiers for adopting innovative measures for surveillance .
- The Indian Army has finalised procurement of 12 high performance patrol boats for surveillance of large water bodies. The boats are to be deployed in Pangong Tso Lake in Eastern Ladakh.
- Malayalam poet and lyricist Anil Panachooran passed away at a private hospital on Sunday night after suffering a heart attack. He was 55.
- Some Congress leaders on Sunday raised serious concern over the grant of approval to Bharat Biotech’s COVID-19 vaccine for restricted use, saying it is ‘premature’ and can prove dangerous. Congress leaders Shashi Tharoor & Jairam Ramesh said the approval is premature and Covaxin’s use should be avoided as it could be dangerous.

- India took over as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) from January 1 for a two-year term. Monday will be the first active day of India for the two year term. Ambassador TS Tirumurti, Permanent Representative of India to United Nations.
- The Indian Council of Medical Research announced that India has successfully cultured the new coronavirus strain that was first reported in the UK.
- Indian Army Chief General MM Naravane is on a 3-day visit to South Korea, he received a Guard of Honour at Republic of Korea Army Headquarters in Gyeryong, South Korea. He called on Gen. Nam Yeong to discuss issues of bilateral defence cooperation.

- UK government has announced that from January 1, 2021, value-added tax (VAT) no longer applies to women`s sanitary products .
- Rattled China attacks Trump administration : It is to be noted that President Trump approved several policies against China on different issues, including trade, Tibet and Taiwan. Trump never missed an opportunity to target Chinese President Xi Jingping and was very blunt in his criticism against the Xi.
- Days before US President-elect Joe Biden is set to take oath as new president of the US, China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Saturday (January 2) expressed hope taht the Biden would not continue with outgoing US President Donald Trump’s Cold War policy towards Beijing and adopt a sensible approach to restore normal ties between the two countries.
- Turkey-Pakistan in top-level discussion over nuclear weapon program : The Pakistani defence delegation visited Turkish defence companies including Bakyar (UAV OEM), TAI,HAVELSAN and ASELSAN. It also met top Turkish Army generals and bureaucrats dealing with the production of missiles and other aerial technologies.
- China’s New Year nuisance: New regulations to control religious beliefs : It is primarily aimed at Christian groups as Christianity is one of the fastest growing religions and lately foreigners have had some freedom in China to live as Christians. With implementation of the new regulations, China also aims at pre-empting any possible move from the Vatican towards religious liberties for Christians in China and filling of vacant seats of bishops.
- Vandalized 100 years old Hindu temple will be reconstructed, says Khyber Pukhtunkhwa govt after protests in Pakistan : The incident sparked protests and drew strong condemnation from the human rights activists and the minority Hindu community in Pakistan.

- Every year, the World Braille Day is celebrated on January 4 by United Nations and several other international organizations. Braille is the representation of alphabetic and numerical symbols using six dots. The dots represent the letters and numbers and mathematical, musical and scientific symbols as well. The day is celebrated to create awareness of the importance of Braille as a means of communication in the realization of human rights for the blind.

Former India captain and current BCCI president, Sourav Ganguly, underwent angioplasty on Saturday (January 2) and is “stable” and “completely conscious” now. Earlier on Saturday, Ganguly was hospitalised in Kolkata’s Woodlands Hospital after complaining of chest pain. Doctors later said he had suffered a heart attack.
