आज के दिन 2013 में सचिन तेंदुलकर के क्रिकेट से संन्यास लेने के संकल्प के बाद भारत सरकार ने देश के सबसे बड़े नागरिक सम्मान भारत रत्न देने की आधिकारिक घोषणा की थी । 40 वर्ष की आयु मे इस सम्मान को प्राप्त करने वाले वे सबसे कम उम्र के व्यक्ति और सर्वप्रथम खिलाड़ी हैं। इससे पहले यह सम्मान खेल के क्षेत्र में नहीं दिया जाता था किन्तु सचिन तेंदुलकर को यह सम्मान देने के लिए पहले नियमों में बदलाव किया गया था।
