MUMBAI, 22 JANUARY, 2019 (GPN) : The Sustainable Fashion day on 31st January is all set for an exciting lineup as the collaborative effort of Reliance Industries Ltd.’s R | Elan ‘Fashion for Earth’ initiative, Lakmé Fashion Week (LFW) and the United Nations (UN) in India, the Circular Design Challenge will announce its first winner.
An exciting line up of shows, designers, creative presentations and ideas is on the cards for the event which will be held from 30th January to 3rd February 2019, at JioGarden, Bandra-Kurla Complex in Mumbai.
Among the presenting designers are Raghavendra Rathore, Rohit Bal, Gaurav Gupta, Shantanu & Nikhil, Anita Dongre, Gauri & Nainika, Ashish N Soni, Narendra Kumar, Shivan & Narresh, Pero, Eka, Bodice, Kunal Rawal who will showcase their collection through new collaborations and themes.
The Lakmé Absolute Ultimate Finale designers of the season are Shantanu & Nikhil whose collection will revolve around the beauty theme, ‘Matte Reinvent” while the season will be unveiled by with Gaurav Gupta with an opening show at The Royal Opera House, Mumbai.Gupta’s collection will be aimed at kicking off the season with a powerful collection boasting of zardoz work, chikankari, and handwoven brocade textiles with handcrafted, 3D flowers in organza and soft georgette, along with a judicious smattering of crystals.

CIRCULAR DESIGN CHALLENGE IN PARTNERSHIP WITH UN ENVIRONMENT, FASHION FOR EARTH BY R | ELAN™ & LAKMÉ FASHION WEEK (FINAL JURY)
The Circular Design Challenge (CDC) is India’s largest sustainable fashion award. It is a platform for young fashion/accessory entrepreneurs to showcase their innovative ideas and collections made by using materials from diverse sources of waste including plastic to promote circularity. CDC has received over 900 registrations from 30 different cities of India and 8 finalists have been shortlisted for the final jury. All 8 finalists will present their pitch presentations as start-ups and showcase garments made with circular design principles to a jury of leading industry experts. The winner will be announced by the jury at the end of the session and a cash prize of Rs. 20 lacs along with other benefits will be awarded.

NGO AVANI, KUMAON, UTTARAKHAND
Avani includes a network of nearly 800 artisans and farmers in Kumaon who work together to grow, process, design and create products that generate livelihoods for rural residents. To date, Avani has worked directly with 108 villages, benefitting 4,540 people and indirectly impacting 22,700 people through its various projects and activities. Their primary focus is on sustainably harvested and produced tints, dyes, textiles and garments. The product range includes raw natural colorants for textile printing and dyeing as well as stoles, shawls and yarns.

SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT FOR NORTHEAST INDIA – WEAVING PARTNERSHIPS FOR CHANGE

‘Action Plan on North East India Report’ (APONIR) is a project that was launched at LFW for the fashion industry with an aim to strengthen the livelihoods of artisans by providing them with development support and market linkages. The achievements and interventions of the project made in marginalised handloom clusters in Assam in areas such as Barkhetri (Nalbari) and Rampur (Kamrup) towards sustainable production and development will be presented in association with implementation partner GoCoop. There will be a fashion showcase of special capsule collections developed by well known fashion brands such as Anita Dongre Grassroot and Raymond (in collaboration with Antar-Agni) of Eri and Muga textiles hand-woven by artisans in these clusters.

LFW #FASHUP BY FASHION REVOLUTION – DOODLAGE | DOOR OF MAAI | ROSSBELLE

#FashUp is an initiative by Lakmé Fashion Week and Fashion Revolution, a not-for-profit global movement in over 100 countries with focus on campaigning for greater transparency in the fashion supply chain. #FashUp brings together three young labels, Doodlage, Door of Maai and Rossbelle who are dedicated to upcyling and
sustainability as a business philosophy. The designers will showcase upcycled collections made by used and waste Tencel fabric that was used during LFW Feb 2018 for a sustainable fashion installation in the central avenue of JioGarden.
ANAAM X RANGSUTRA | ANKA | EREENA
#FashionForLivelihoods will present collections created by three entrepreneurs/organisations who have strengthened livelihoods of the artisans in their respective regions with consistent efforts. Ereena by Jyoti Reddy from Hyderabad will showcase garments made with organic Eri silk and Eri cotton textiles. The textile are made with natural dyes by weavers in Assam, Telangana, West Bengal and Andhra Pradesh. Usha Devi Balakrishnan’s ‘Anka’ will showcase Balarampuram sarees made with traditional cotton yarn by artisans of Payattuvila cooperative society from Balarampuram, Trivandrum. LFW Gen Next alumni label Anaam, in collaboration with Rangsutra, a community owned company of artisans from remote villages of India, will showcase collections made with handloom cotton fabric and Bandhej tie and dye techniques in villages of Napasar and Lunkarnsar near Bikaner.
BUNON is a contemporary and ready to wear sustainable fashion brand by designer Soumitra Mondal from Kolkata that was launched at Vlas Blomme in Meguro, Tokyo (Japan) in 2018 in consultation with Japanese designer Satoshi Ishii. Bunon is launching in India for the first time as a label through Lakmé Fashion Week this season. The garments are made with Khadi, silk and linen in handlooms made by weavers in clusters such as Vardhaman, Murshidabad and Nodia in West Bengal. Soumitra has been supporting over 350 weavers in these clusters for the past 15 years as part of his fashion business.

The Woolmark Company, the leading authority on merino wool from Australia and péro, one of India’s high-end handmade fashion labels along with Kullu based wool weaver’s cooperative, Bhuttico, have come together to create a unique collaboration from #FarmToFashion. The “Grown in Australia, Made in India” campaign is going to showcase handmade merino wool textiles with pero’s signature styles. A special stall of Bhuttico at the LFW showroom area will also showcase stoles, shawls, accessories and fabrics made by its weavers with merino wool in Kullu, Himachal Pradesh.

TENCELTM PRESENTS ANITA DONGRE
Tencel™ collaborates with Lakmé Fashion Week for the third time and one of India’s leading designers, Anita Dongre, for a special prét collection in womenswear and menswear. The development of this collection started from TENCEL™ fibres which are spun with silk and satin and finally woven into fine summer silk blends.
Tencel™ branded lyocell fiber (made by Lenzing Austria) is derived from sustainable wood sources and harvested from 100 percent traceable certified and controlled sources following the stringent guidelines of the Lenzing Wood and Pulp Policy. Tencel™ branded lyocell fiber is produced in a closed loop solvent-spinning production process, which transforms wood pulp into cellulosic fibers with high resource efficiency and low ecological impact. This economically viable manufacturing process recycles process water and reuses the solvent at a recovery rate of more than 99%. This process received the European Award for the Environment from the European Commission in the category ‘The Technology Award for Sustainable Development’.ENDS
