MUMBAI, (GPN) : The annual celebration of International Women’s Day this year focuses on ‘Push for Progress.’ Keeping this theme in mind, Hinduja Healthcare Surgical commemorated the day by organizing an interactive session focusing on women’s health. The session was spearheaded by Dr. Kiran Coelho, Consultant Gynecologist and Obstetrician and Dr. Sheilja Singh, Consultant Physician & Lifestyle Management Specialist from the hospital and also supported by Bollywood personalities Bhagyashree, Alankrita Sahai (Miss Diva Earth 2014), Payal Ghosh and HimmanshooMalhotra.

According to the reports, more than 50% of Indian women are anemic. Postpartum depression is quite common in Indian women; but awareness is low and  new mothers hesitate to seek support. STDs are on a rise despite the assumption that protective measures or contraceptives are finding more buyers. 1 in 5 women are diagnosed with PCOS and the more we run through the statistics we realize how alarming the numbers are.

With an aim to motivate women not to neglect their health, Dr. Kiran Coelho, Consultant Gynecologist & Obstetrician, Hinduja Healthcare Surgical said, “Women have always been successfully juggling various roles; however, they tend to keep their own health at the bottom of their priority. Today on the occasion of International Women’s Day, we want to encourage women who live in unbearable pain even in this day and age to have an open chat about a very real problem concerning their overall health.”

Expressing joy in being a part of this initiative, Bhagyashree, Actor said, “Happiness and smiles, both have ‘I” in the center for a reason, you have to look after yourself first.  Women’s Health often takes a back seat in their lives as they tend to focus on their husband, kids, families, home and career, irrespective of their education or social status. Indian women in particular are brought up to be givers with their own health taking a back seat, very often their emotions and well being thus getting compromised due to lack of information, hormonal imbalances or simply delay in availing treatment and care at the appropriate time.”

Alankrita Sahai, Miss Diva Earth 2014 and Actor said, “In the patriarchal society we live in, women are always pushed into a subordinate existence. If we let people think we are secondary then it is our fault too. With this initiative, we want to compel women to stop being shy of their own needs, their own bodies. Seek help, don’t be ashamed!”

Dr. Sheilja Singh, Consultant Physician & Lifestyle Management Specialist, Hinduja Healthcare Surgical said, “Many health issues are not totally preventable due to hereditary and genetic causes, but one can still take precautions and make simple lifestyle changes to live a healthy life.  Through this session we encourage every woman to listen to their body signals and embrace good health by seeking medical help whenever required. We urge women to progress in every walk of life without compromising on their health.”

The event culminated with the audience sharing their thoughts on what defines a healthy lifestyle and thereby the necessary steps they need to undertake. Doctors present on the occasion shared important tips on maintaining good health and following healthy lifestyle.
