Soman arrived in the holy city of Jerusalem a few days before the marathon and took the opportunity to travel around in Israel. He was also invited as a special speaker at the official Press Conference and addressed the Israeli media along with Jerusalem Mayor, Nir Barkat.
Having waited for years to visit Israel,Soman commented on his first visit to the country and said, “The Jerusalem Marathon was the hook for me. What I thought I would feel is nothing compared to what I feel when I arrived in Israel. There’s a lot of talk about conflict and violence in the world today and a lot around this region, but when I came here I felt peace.”
Talking about the Marathon, Mayor Barkat said,“It’s not just a sporting event, it’s a spiritual event. We’re in the holy city of Jerusalem, running where kings and prophets walked, where the Bible happened.”
As part of his visit to Israel, Soman also visited the Dead Sea – lowest point on earth, where he rubbed Dead Sea mud on his body and face after floating in the Dead Sea; he enjoyed a segway ride in Jerusalem, visited in the Old City including the markets, offered prayers at the Western Wall and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre.
In recent times, Israel has seen a growth in the number of India tourists visiting the country. In 2016, approximately 45,000 Indian tourists visited Israel. Earlier popular for only holy land tours, today Indians have gone beyond the holy land trail and are visiting Israel’s famous cities like Tel Aviv, Eilat and Dead Sea. Israel is a vibrant and modern country, located on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea, which is rich in diversity and culture offering enthralling activities and breath-taking attractions for every kind of traveller. Be it family and leisure getaways, party and nightlife experiences, adventure and rejuvenation, Israel has a variety of holiday options to explore, one that will suit every kind of traveller and vacationer.
