Design would be the key lead for Prime Minister’s Make in India Initiative to deliver Global products.

Mumbai, 6 December, 2016 : Hon’ble Prime Minister’s vision of Make in India has Design as the central theme which would be supported by CII Design Initiatives. CII Design initiatives led by Dr. Pawan Goenka, Managing Director, Managing Director, Mahindra and Mahindra Ltd through National Committee on Design envision design led growth.

CII – India Design Summit is a platform to create an enduring partnership between design and organizations leading to innovation and increased economic competitiveness. Just as large and small gears work together in harmony, when designers work with organizations, they ignite innovation.

A new door of opportunity has opened in India for massive design interventions through the Central Government’s key initiatives such as “Make in India”, “Digital India”, “Clean India”, and “Smart City”. These initiatives have a massive Government commitment and zeal to succeed. This would help to reach Make in India products to global markets.

Design is an integrating force, a catalytic tool to cause and leverage sustainable competitive advantage for businesses and the nation. It is the X factor for humanizing massive public initiatives of the Government. Design is The New Now and this is the theme of the India Design Summit.

Prof. Pradyumna Vyas, Director of National Institute of Design and Member Secretary, India Design Council in the inaugural session talked about the massive potential of design in India and rued the fact that design is still underutilized in the industry. He told that the potential size of design industry is Rs. 11, 681 Crores and is expected to be Rs. 18, 832 Crores by 2020. Of this presently only a market worth Rs. 2100 Crore is realized meaning more than 80% of the design potential is yet to be realized in India. The industrial design segment alone has the potential of Rs. 11, 000 Crores by 2020.

He said that the role of design in business is creating value. A well-designed product, service, or organization is more valuable than a product, service, or organization that is not well designed. To boost manufacturing India must have an inclusion of design. The term R&D that today stands for Research & Development, in my opinion should be renamed as Research & Design.

Mr Ninad Karpe, Deputy Chairman, CII Western Region and MD & CEO, Aptech expressed that, The Government of India, having realized the crucial role of manufacturing in India’s economic future has rolled out the ambitious Make in India program. The Government realizes that a vibrant manufacturing sector is essential for job oriented growth so that the benefits of growth transmit to a larger posse of people. Manufacturing sector not only creates jobs, but also contributes to increased innovation.

Mr. Anjan Das, Executive Director, CII mentioned that the CII National Committee on Design has been working incessantly for the last 16 years to ensure that Indian businesses integrate design into their operations, to enable a thriving design industry and a vibrant design ecosystem.

The summit will bring about new ideas, new initiatives, and new thinking needed to contribute to the larger picture of design in the knowledge economy. The purpose of the summit is to synergize, find new methods of working together with an attitude of openness, cooperation, and exploration.
